So my brothers b day has been and go and hes finally desided what to spend the money im giving him on.

A staff, im not sure what kind of staff i should be looking for him in terms of value for money, quality and a good beginer staff.
Is it worth simply buying a fire staff right away and using that to pratice or is it really worth getting a standard staff ?

Hes quite into the LED/GLOW staffs.
Im looking to spend from 20 - £35 really
Help and ideas would be appreciated

Mike

If your going to be spinning with fire staff in the end, in my opinion, it's good to get one fairly early on and just spin with it unlit to get feel for the weight and the way it behaves. There can be a lot of variation in the weights and sizes!

But in terms of glow staff Firetoys sell some good Glow Staff. Home of Poi are currently only selling the uber cool staff that cost a bomb. (Will be mine one day! Mahaha!)

Other than that I'm not to familiar with whats going around in the glow staff world. You might want to ask Felix or Xan. They are very much more educated in this area than me! Very Happy

glow staff wise there actually aint that much about :(, like you said dae there is the firetoys one, the hop ones and then the flowlight ones the latter 2 are quite expensive though, On a side note hyperlight staffs are in the pipeline i think but that wont be for a while :(

ok you should ask your bro if he wants to learn just staff spinning or contact usually people start with spinning then move on to contact and doubles. ( i dont know how knowledgeable he is on the subject so show him some vids of the different styles). I ask this because contact staffs tend to be alot heavier and a bit longer so you can get a slow spin and more reaction time. Spinning staffs should be a bit lighter and shorter (so you dont clip em on the ground). Plus your gonna have to buy a staff that fits his height (usually shoulder heightish)

So in terms of staffs firetoys do sell some mint ones

http://www.firetoys.co.uk/juggling/flames_n_games_wooden_staffs.html - i have not played with this one but it does look like a good practice staff Smile

http://www.firetoys.co.uk/juggling/Medium_length_fire_staff__65mm_wick____orange.html#aFT_2fFS_2fM65_2fO - this is a basic fire spinning staff which would be good to start him off and the weight is quite light so contact might be hard.

http://www.firetoys.co.uk/juggling/Firetoys_Firbre_Pro_contact_Staffs.html - these are the daddy of contact staffs.

http://www.firetoys.co.uk/juggling/glow_staff.html - then these are your glow staffs. They have quite a bit a flex so really its down to personal preference!

or you could make him some will mean some effort but you will get exactly what you want Smile

oh another thing from personal experience if you get him a fire staff dont let him practice over concrete as everytime he drops it the wicks will fray, mine are really bad from it, also but socks over the wicks as protectors Smile

hope that helps a bit. Mynci would be your man really give him a pm if you need anymore info Smile

Unless you wanna go insane and get some Aerotechs Staff. It's madness! When I was at Synergy there were about 5 or 6 people spinning Aerotech doubles. Juggling Aerotech Balls and playing with Aerotech poi. How much money do you think is in that room! (That should be a maths exam question or sumthing!)

I don't know I'm not familiar with what's going on, on Aerotechs side of the fence. Hopefully they are still in production at least. I wouldn't mind having one or two to play with!

Oooooo if Hyperlights were pressure sensitive that would be fantastic!

atfer much research and chatting to the grand staff masters on here, i ended up going to oddballs to buy my 1st (contact) staff.. i wanted to feel how heavy it was and how each spun a little different.

I've started to believe you almost have to be 'one' with your toys after all your trying to get them to be an extension of you body..

Anyway enought of that guff.. i got this one in the end.. my mum is knitting me some wick booties to keep them clean and dry now that is muddy outside
