Spoken with an uncle whos teaches electronics and with my dad and we're looking to create glow poi on par if not better then hyperlights. We've got a few idea's on how they've managed to make the hyperlights quite so bright and recon we might be able to top them
We're gona be looking into the electronics of it all soon, and testing out some of the materials we've got in mind.
Might also be making some fire poi, since my dad is a sheet metal worker. Which means he can easily replicate the kind of fire poi sold by many of the major bands.
Early days at the moment but i'll keep you posted on how it goes.
We're collating some opinions on why people seem to prefer hyperlights to standard glow poi to give us some standards to aim for.

You're mad!! Hyperlights can't be bested:P hehehe!
No just joshing! I'll be watching this with some interest!
Reasons why Hyperlights are better than the rest:
1) Much much cheaper than Aerotech.
2) Illuminate the entire spinning object with light rather than just the head.
3) Made to be easily programmable by anyone.
4) Software is inclusive so you can hook it up to your pc and design your own set of colour effects.
5)Covers the entire colour spectrum that can fade/step/strobe.
6) Shareable Sequences feature.
7) Can be made sound / bass reactive.
8) Accelerometers are going to be made available to implement.
9) Can be made music responsive so that colour and effect changes in key and beat with the music. |

Well I could do I 'spose, the thing is tho I've got a fair few projects going on at the minute as it is! Got Project Uber Guide under way which is taxing heck loads of my time as it is:P
- Got MOTMv2 at the back of my head.
- Have the MOTM video to prep, edit, cut and post.
- Have Poipoi Guide taxing all my weekday time
- Got loads of videos to do for my friends
- Poipoi fest will be organized this year so that's going to be taking up some more time
- Then there's all of the other potential MOTM meets that will be occurring this year lol!
But yeah if ya need any help with it or anything then I'm sure I could lend a hand! |

Well I have a three year head start, but competition is always good - keeps us all on our toes
I registered an account a long time ago, but haven't posted in a while... a mate from DMP pointed me in the direction of this thread though so I thought I might re-kindle my presence |

|
|
Looking at the list of what hyperlights are capable of, I can see one area in which they can be improved upon.
Last year I started working on a small computer program which is designed to control light sequences and tone based on the proximity of objects within a room.
The program uses custom code which translates musical frequency (pitch) into Red Green and Blue values. If you understand how a Theremin works, you are part way to understanding how the process can be adapted.
Theoretically it should be possible to implement this in poi, juggling balls or glow-staff, or for that matter any other LED based object so you could have the light-sequence following the dominant tones rather than the current beat of the piece - this would look fantastic in troupe pieces where for instance you could have 1 or 2 spinners following the beat and others following the "melody" with faster colour changes.
By adding in pluggable audio filters the sequence could be adapted so it would only work in a particular frequency range protecting the sequence from drifting off as other frequencies bleed across.
It is probably the case that you wouldn't want the poi proximity sensitive (although this might be an idea) but the code can be made to work with any frequency or voltage based input source so a tiny microphone built into the glow-object would suffice. |
