They actually arrived thismorning, i only ordered them yesterday!!
..Me being me i couldnt wait to try them out. So i stole some of my mums parafin that she uses for her gerden lamps and soaked them and got spinning!!
It was amazing. The adrenaline rush for the first spin was immense. Then i got Fixat1oN round my house because hes also never spun fire before, so i let him have a few goes, then we went down and got some parafin and some lighters. Got a big 4litre bottle of parafin for just under £5 which is pretty good..
Got Fixat1oN coming round again later when it gets dark and another poi newbie. Its gonna be good!
Big hugs to RidRequiem & Daedra for helping me out, thanks for getting me obsessed and turning me into a pyromaniac guys

ahhh, nobody told me to let them soak for that long...
they are a bit charred, but i guess thats normal considering they were on fire.. |

Hey there LJ!!
So you had your first burn eh?! Nice one sir! Yeah it's such a rush when you burn your poi for the first time. God I still remember my first burn all those moons ago!!
It's always good to have people around you who are at your skill level. It makes learning that much more fun!
AJ, I think there's a right and wrong about the whole 24 hr soak thing to be honest. I don't think that not leaving them in soak for 24 hours is a major contributory factor in poi disintegration!
Other reasons include:
- Dropping them on concrete.
- Exposure to the elements (Rain, snow, frost, rusty water!! Etc).
- Letting the flames go out themselves rather than putting them out whilst still lit!!!
- Clashing.
- Unwrapping and re-wrapping them.
- Poor storage conditions.
- Consistent mixed use of different fuels.
If you take good care of your poi, trying not to do any of the above, then you should be fine!
Various tips on care of poi are:
- Extinguish the flame before it goes out by itself. If you smell them while their nearly out you can distinctly smell a burning smell rather than the paraffin smell we all know and love! That smell is when there's no paraffin left and just the Kevlar is left burning away.
- Soak them for an hour before use.
- After you've extinguished your flame. Make sure you duck your poi into your fuel. This dissipates the heat and smoldering which can damage the edges of the wick.
- After you've finished spinning. Put your poi heads into a sealed container full of paraffin. This makes sure that they're completely moistened through and adequately fueled for your next burn
- If your practicing with them unlit, shove an old pair of socks over them so if you drop them, they don't get damaged when they hit the ground!
The above should help prolong the life of your wicks! |

cheers Daedra, once again :P
i didnt soak them for an hour first spin, about 15mins, and i put them out with a wet towel and then put them straight back into the fuel. they are a bit black and charred, but its all good, i dont intend on practising with them or anything like that, thats what the socks are for!!
might have to swap the tennis balls in the socks with bricks so they they are the same weight though!!
spinning again in like half an hour =] in addicted damnit!!
might have a go at trying to get some pictures.

Aye. Well I bought a set of monkey fists and used them the same night. Finished, redipped them, wrapped them up then came back the next morning to see them in a pile of ash.
Hadnt dropped them on the floor or exposed them to unnecassary elements.
Perhaps its more an issure with Monkey Fists due to the more delicate nature of them.
I havent even had a problem with my core based ones. Perhaps me and my friend were just unlucky. |

| hey guys apparently the 24 hour kevlar soak thing is an urban miff and not essential. An hour should be fine... once the wick has absorbed its capacity it's absorbed its capacity if you catch my drift. |

Camp? Camp!? hehe:P
Back into this discussion are we?!
I've come to the point now where tails don't do anything for me! Socks are just plain amazing because they make spinning much easier to do more technical tricks than with chains.
But fire is just so cool that just the sound and the pretty visuals makes up for the chains! (^_^)
Ahhh so it IS an Urban Miff!! I knew it! Muahaha!
But seriously tho guys just make sure your careful wen you're doing your tricks. Have an hour or so warm up first with them unlit so you can get a good feel for the weights and how to do your tricks etc! Can't emphasize that enough! |
