hello poi people,

Im completely new to poi but seem to be addicted without having actually started yet! i want to get some poi but am having trouble knowing what to start with, are socks best or should i go for something like soft furry balls that wont hurt me?!

Im literally new to all things poi, so it's a 'get some poi and teach myself from scratch' situation, so any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! x

hi Wonder Woman,

about 18 months ago i was in exactly the same situation as you...had never picked up a set of poi in my life, and decided it was time to learn. I bought a set of mouse poi as these are inexpensive and i figured if it wasn't my bag i wouldn't have spent much money on it!!! These mouse poi are still one of my favourite sets to date. This is why..... they are short tailed so the tails don't get tangled around each other, they have a bean bag head...ideal for the inevetable whacks you will recieve, and they have a short string so that you can do tricks on the inside of your arms (without hitting your torso!)

I then purchased a pair of the empty sock poi these are also fabulous because you can fill them with whatever weight and squidgyness you want! sock poi have the big advantage of no strings and therefore very little frustration due to the strings getting wound around each other. They also open up a whole new world of tricks and moves that can't be achieved as easily when spinning 'stringed' poi.

I haven't come across the fluffy poi but they sound like a cool idea...just make sure they are a good weight and that they dont have something hard in the middle that defeats the object!
hope this helps
em

Thanks for the advice! im thinking the sock poi and bean bags may be the least painful and transportable, but u never know, as soon as pay day comes around i'll prob get spend happy and get too excited in the shop section! until then ive done a bit of craftwork with some socks and sandwich bags filled with oats!

I can see poi and facebook collectively helping me fail my finals!!!

Thanks again!
