I'm having a lot of trouble with shoulder reels, in three areas in particular:

1) Spinning both the poi together, they keep overlapping and tangling

2) I'm very strongly right handed, and my left hand is all over the place

3) I keep hitting myself whenever I bring the poi over my head to spin at my back!

Can anyone offer some assistance or advice?

Is there anyway to strengthen or get more control over my left hand?

And do I really have to lean forwards to stop hitting myself, or is there an easier way?

I'm mildly desperate for any kind of advice or suggestions. D:

MY FRIEND

I'ma tell you what I tell everyone.
Put one poin down, get the movement with that hand sorted.
Put that poi down. You are now empty handed :P
Pick up other poi, sort out bad arm, this will take much practice, but just keep doing it for tedious amounts of time so your body learns the feeling and the movement.
Then
AND ONLY THEN
Aim to spin them both at the same time.

A little shoulder rotation is fine cos it helps it work and makes it look more fluid, but you should be able to do it dead still, so your leaning forward is a problem.
The one-hand-at-a-time practicing will sort this out, as you can decide what hand is doing what wrong.
Remember, its like a 3D figure of 8 in front of and behind you and should stay as in as flat a plane as you can manage on either side.

I agree try with one first.

Do it over and over again. Let your body learn the action not your head. Then it will come naturally!!!
