Not loving myself here but...
Living next to the seaside and the glorious beach you tend to look out over the bay and see what everyones up to, sometimes theres some volleyball and othertimes football. Last week I was down on the beach, cooking like the proverbial lobster, got up and started doing some duo moves with my mate in our bikinis (we looked hot, everyone was watching). Some girls come over to us with their socks and were asking us about our moves and showing us what they could do, it was quie cool because they were totaly in awe. I was awed..
Anyways, few days later I see some bloke on the beach giving hip reel turns a good old try with the most luminous pink cobras. Immediateley I thought "gay", but its not about that, I should have taken some photos for proof really that poi is catching on in a big stylie.
I dont know if photos can be put into posts using a hosting service (photobucket) or somthing *shrug* but I suggest that if you see an unknown spinner out and about, take a picture and post it up.
What do you think? |

Hay theres nothing wrong with bright pink cobras
If i see somone who looks friendly with poi id go talk to them, tell them about the site, teach them the ways etc.
I agree there are pros and cons to growing communitys, but aslong as everyone stay friendly and helpful should be a problem.
(im sure you've noticed lots of posts from me, im bored ) |

It's kinda true that more people are taking up poi. On the other hand, it's still (mercifully) far from mainstream. I've seen newspapers refer to cobras as "colourful ribbons". Some people I know still can't seem to remember what "those pom pom things that you spin" are called.
I wonder when some company will decide to use poi spinners in their TV advertising... Then people might actually remember the name "poi". Not quite sure how I'd feel about that tho. The mainstream has a habit of destroying things...
Actually, I'm surprised the BBC haven't used a bunch of poi spinners in one of their little filler thingys... |

I agree that it is far from mainstream. When I started spinning, none of my friends or family even knew what Poi were!
That's a very good point about the BBC filler thingys, it would work well and look cool....although I have to say it would be a bit odd seeing it on TV! |

UFO, dear, UFO.
And yeah, I certainly thought so! :D
I'm sure I've seen random snippets of poi on TV before... just not enough to really see what it even was.
Actually, shows like CSI seem to have occasional cool performance clips -- poi... fire hoops... fire breathing.... |

Yeah CSI is good for that kind of thing it seems....I have seen other programs with spinning in them, but I can't remember for the life of me which ones! |

You don't want it mainstream realy it sounds nice but it changes things
one of my other hobbies is Parkour (Free Running) when i first started no one knew what it was which ment exspalianing what i was doing the security or the police harder, but now everyone does it theres lots of people who have the wrong idear and give polite people like myself a bad name amoung security and police because they just run away or climb on roof etc.(not that security of police are a problem with poi i imagine, but you get the idear =p )
the forum for parkour i used to be on had 3000ish members worldwide when i joined, it now has over 18000 due to the adverts and tv programs, there now full of people who can't follow the forum rules and make it hard to find a good topic of conversation anywhere.
woo long post, sorry |

I'm still crossing my fingers that poi will stay away from the mainstream. I can't think of much offhand that the mainstream hasn't successfully managed to ruin! |

I think poi is abstract enough to stay "underground" i mean take fire breathing, everyone knows about it and most would think is look "cool" but you don't have a mass uprising of fire breathers (at least not 1 i know of) |
