how to make sock poi ;P
ok you will need one pair of knee high socks
scissors
1 sewing kit
rice or plastic beads, ballons, scales, pencil/pen and funnel or if your lazy juggling balls
1 - get your knee high socks and cut them at the heel (or above depending how long you want them and take into account stretch) in a shape like this ( so the ball will fit nicely in the bottom.
2 - turn the sock inside out and sew the cut. (do it twice so it is strong)
3 - repeat steps 1 and 2 with other sock
4 - Lazy option insert juggling ball
5 - non lazy option - get your ballon stick the funnel in it and fill with rice/plastic beads you will have to poke the rice/plastic beads down with the pencil and if it gets annoying take the funnel out blow the balloon up a bit and all the rice/plastic beads will fall to the bottom. repeat until you get to desired weight 90g - 130g depending on how heavy you want it.
6 - once at desired weight suck the air out of the balloon and tie. now cut the top bit off another ballon and wrap that around the rice/plastic beads filled one. (this makes it waterproof and machine washable)
7 - pop the ballon in the end and if your feeling fancy sew the balloon in at the bottom of the sock.
8 - to make contact poi repeat step 5 but do it a 3rd of the weight of your original poi head weight eg 30g for a 90g head. and add to the top (hair bands work good as does thread but sewing is the strongest)
taaaa-daaaaa brand new sock poi

Well written dude.
Just one thing to add -- my sock filling of choice lately is cheap plastic beads. You can buy a kilogram bag for a few quid, and then when your socks get grubby (which they always do) you can just throw them in the laundry. |

Nice tut
Although these days I tend to feel cutting and sewing is a waste of time and I use Gizmo's method of just turning the socks inside out and 'knotting' at the heel instead of cutting and sewing. Knots are always gonna be stronger than sewn thread.
Also, if you want to counterweight the handles you can also use knots instead of sewing and make sure you use 'over the knee' socks instead of just 'knee high', this will give you the extra length you need
Hope that was of interest.

Had some spare time on my hands today so decided to make a pair...
Forgot how hard it would be to find knee length socks during middle of "summer".
Did manage to find pair of slipper socks though, bit thick but no cutting or stitchng required, perfect length for me and only £1!!! Added bonus, Bart Simpson ones rather than pink frilly nasty ones.
Gotta try lighter weight though as nearly did mself a nasty accident with them!

Feely, your sock making tuition has made me some FINE socks. May i offer some tips from experience?
At step 5, making a funnel works much better than just ramming them in (hugely frustrating) - but what is brilliant is if you cut the top off a bottle, and stretch the balloon end and wrap it round the bottle top bit.
This is grand because then rather than having to poke the rice in with a pencil, you pour all the rice in the top bit, squash the bottle top section against your face (airtight) and then breathe out, the balloon blows up and all the rice pours in :D yay!
I have to say, as much as sewn bits look great, and wont slip about like hairbands - i prefer hairbands/elastic bands as they can be adjusted, depending on whether you feel like spinning long or short poi that day. And you can add and remove counterweights.
Last thing: If you have foxy socks that you like - this works the same but is easier. I just transferred mine from my stripey socks to my foxy socks. I find foxy socks 10 times easier to do wraps and tangles with, and you can jam counterweights up into the narrow end. so its all good :D |

and there was me spending 50p on a funnel cos couldn't think of an alternative to get the rice into the balloon....lol
Then again with my brains, i'd have probably tried the top of a glass bottle!!! |

Ooo! I have a trick for this!
I usually measure out my beads/rice/whatever into a tea cup. Then to get them into the sock, just stretch the fabric around the cup, hold it tight and tip it upside down. Quick, easy, and avoids having to chase beads across the floor (and with wooden floorboards, they scatter surprisingly far!).

S'funny... I find tennis balls too light these days. And they kinda sting.
Though they were great when I was a beginner! |
