the vid worked for me!
Right erm, try reel turns as they're a good way to get from backwards to forward. I still use them all the time but split or butterfly style etc. Still the same idea.
Since you've got butterfly, maybe try angel wings as well.
Also learn everything you know in reverse |

w00t! You've only been doing these for one weekend, and you're already got the basic motion down on both sides!
Nice going! Seriously!
Putting them together may be tricky, but at this rate, it seriously isn't going to take you long!
Angel wings, you say? Ok, but be careful. They have a habit of catching you on the side of the head. Just don't give yourself concussion, K?
Again, buid your way up gradually. Seems that worked well last time.
Start by practicing the hand motions, one hand at a time. It's just as if you're holding a juggling ball, and you're throwing it over your head. Try it with an actual juggling ball if that helps. Just make sure there are no windows behind you.
When you feel comfortable, try it with a poi. It needs to be a slow bouncy kinda motion (think about how an apple bobbing in the water looks).
Don't try with both hands yet. Believe me, that would give anyone trouble! |

Thanks
*is very proud*
I can't believe I got them working(ish). The video did end with them attempting together, but dad's camera battery died >_<
Angel wings... I am sure what you're saying would be massively helpful... if I knew where i needed to start. :(
Concussion - yes, must be careful with that... might be getting some foamy kids tennis balls tomorrow to turn into poi, theyd be useful
I think if I tried a juggling ball, I'd have a choice between window and hedge, but thanks for the warning, that wouldn't have occurred to me until I heard the window break...
College means less poi time, but I'm aiming at 3 hours per day... averaged 5 a day at the weekend so not unachievable I'm sure.
Either way, my sense of disillusionment at my poi-ing ability has gone completely!
Thanks :D |

Yeh, i have dedication, just not ability
I get a little bit obsessed with doing things... like poi... and then want to do very little other than work on them for ages.
Xan, if you'd rather suggest something safer than angel wings I am cool with whatever... either way I can check this after college again
Here goes |

Just been readin through this thread, I'm loving the enthusiasm you have man!! Well I would like to try and help, but I think Xan has taken the floor in terms of instruction!
Yeah I would say to avoid the Inevitable knocks and bruises, is to either, as you say, get foamy tennis balls and possibly weight those to your preference, or you can buy some furry practice poi, I first saw those in Spain.
link - Furry Poi
I hope this helps you on your quest best of luck! and happy spinning (^_^) |

Normally, I'd say to try the reverse weave, but I'd wait until you get those softer poi -- reverse weaves can and will hit you square in the face.
They're in "intermediate", but personally I think takeouts are a good way to build up to angel wings. Just be careful, because you might have trouble controlling moves behind your head.

The problem is money (what else?)
I am gonna get some fire poi and some soft poi at Christmas, but until then I have to stick with what I have, or make my own... I'm thinking dried fruit might be a nice soft weight in poi? If kept in original bags... mouldy poi - not nice.
I like the enthusiasm of people here to aid me... I am on a minor poi break, as I really damaged stuffs poi-ing off the edge of the top bit of my garden again, and am hence nursing my head, wrist, ribs and leg. I shall be a rather interesting collection of bruises at college. I am hoping to get back to it tomorrow when I've recovered (albeit slightly)
I shall try takeouts, definitely, they look like a simple(ish) precursor to angel wings, especially as it was angel wings that literally sent me over the edge - help *is useless* |

You know what? I'm going to make you a set! What colours do you like?
And don't worry about it costing me anything. I probably have half the stuff I'll need kicking around my house somewhere anyway...

Awwww *is touched*
Thank you very much
I am into general blacks, reds, purples... but also blues and greens...
Basically any colour...
That's great f you... I shall PM my address?
With takeouts *is practising poiless for the evening* is it like butterfly wings going in to the middle, not out, then a forward spin?
*knows what she means in her head* |

Yeah, PM me with it. It'll probably take me a couple of days to put everything together, so there's no hurry...
Erm... If you mean which direction you spin them in, you can spin forwards or reverse. Whichever you find more comfortable. |
