I jsut can't seem to switch direction.

I did the tip from the other thread about doing one hand at a time. I can do one hand at a time. As soon as I try to get two hands doing it, I'm hitting myself in the head with my sock poi.

Very Angry Stupid.. left hand. raaggghhhar.

You mean like, you can do a hip reel one way over and over, but the opposite way to usual is hard?

i had the same problem, and stll struggle with reverse windmills.
Unfortunately its just one of those practice practice practice things.

Maybe give it a rest for a week and learn something new, then try it again. You'll have forgotten the wrong technique, and it makes it easier.

No its more like.. I can go forward and backward with the right hand.
Forward and backward with the left hand.
But put the two hands to together and I whack myself in the forehead or in the back of my head when I try to switch direction.
I get the concept of how its supposed to switch direction only when one hand is in motion. When I have two hands in motion I can't do anything even resembling a hip reel.

alright. i see your problem.

So both hands make a figure of eight each simultaneously yeah?

This time, try doing with both hands, the front bit of the swing (where both poi go in front of you) then just let them die. And stop.

Then leave your hands where they end up. Then try going into the behind your back section of the figure-8's.
It will be hard and you might hit your back cos you are forcing them up and behind you, but if you twist your body in the direction you're going and kinda, bend forward into it as you begin to swing them up -and-behind you, it should work.

Just to give you a feel of what each section should feel like.
Then try putting them together.

Hope this helps.

Yahoooo I figured it out. Well mostly. I'm still whacking myself in the head.

So yes, I realized that all i'm doing is making a figure 8 on each side of my body. Except one hand is doing a forward while the other hand is doing a backward one.
So this explained why I was able to switch direction when I started off in a backward swinging motion, but not switching direction from a forward swinging motion.

When starting off backward swinging, your LEFT hand is making a "forward" figure 8 in the direction change. When you are starting in a forward swinging motion, your left hand has to do a "backward" figure 8.
That left hand backward figure 8 is what is screwing me up!

But.. I've practiced and practiced..and I can do it. Far from having "mastered" it, but I have gotten the motion now both forward and backward without smacking myself in the head or a$$ Razz
Now to mastery!

when i 1st started i had never heard of hip reels etc...
what i did 2 turn (spinning fw) was 2 bring the Right poi over 2 my left side as they moved downwards, turn your body 90 degrees so the poi stay infront of you, then bring ur left poi over to your left side as you turn the last 90 degrees... hey presto! bw spinning!

for turning to fw... just bring both poi to right side, turn 90 degrees following poi then take right hand to right side as you turn the remaining 90 degrees...
ok these are not reels but they get u spinning the opposite direction.
omg try it on your swivelly computer seat!! i just discovered this now! its so much fun!! (maybe im just a loser tho... Wink )
