Fake Accounts

I've noticed a lot of fake or automated accounts are being created simply to advertise some dodgy online gambling websites. To counter this i think there should be some sort of security measures in place like having to type the numbers in from one of those randomly generated images to stop bots from creating accounts, or even make it so the administrator has to review each account before it can be properly registered.

Just a thought!

We've noticed this too, these people sign up with fake email addresses so that our confirmation email bounces back as undeliverable.

Our webmaster is looking into a way round this, pretty much as you suggested. In the mean time we've got a record of all undelivered emails and these accounts will be deleted if they appear to be created with a fake email address.

hey folks! id just like to say the site is really cool, but im finding the abundance of "Buy Cheap ******" and "XXX hardcore free vids" somewhat disturbing lol, what suggestion id make is that if it'd be possible to bulk mail an automated message along the lines of "inactive user accounts being deleted blah blah if you wish to stay please mail back" do you know what i mean? give them a week or so, then if they dont reply just delete them, i know this has probably been thought of, but hey just a thought ^^ cheers guys!

The simplest idea though is use phpbb's forum panel and enable character confirmation, i.e type this image into this box etc.

Automated computers cant see the image so cant complete registration.,

Its pretty easy to do from the phpbb admin panel.

It would take about 30 seconds to do :D

hey daedra,

It is a great suggestion, unfortunately even if we were to send the email out it will have no effect on the future... as spammers join forums/spam within 3mins! then never return. I ban every single member of the forum that joins up with a dodgy looking email address or username, and especially ANYBODY that actually posts spam.

it's unfortunately a problem which is on going as every time you put up protection the next set of nerds crack it!!

Its fool proof.

I know, I tried to hack it once to get some stuff onto my schools network, i.e songs that they dont ever let you have :D

not really....as people have to join to download the videos....they aren't all here for the forum, some join/download/come back for more videos/ disappear.... I am about to remove the next bunch of fakers though...so anybody you see in the userlist who you have seen spam should be removed today....I take off A LOT every day!

everybody that joins, has to receive an email confirmation before they can log in....so thats covered too. So its up to us to keep it as clean and happy as possible....... and i will be dedicating more time to that so hopefully psychotic won't have to do as much!!!!
