Hey,
My name is Miranda (not that that isn't obvious or anything :p)
I have had Poi for about 4 months, and am still pretty bad. I only got them because I decided it was an integral part of being a Young Quaker, being able to spin poi, but I haven't quite got it yet.
I have severe dyspraxia, and hence hit myself, get left and right mixed up etc rather a lot...
Recently however I learnt the three-beat-weave!
I know this doesn't sound much but I am very proud as it took me 4 months. I can also do butterfly (occasionally), and a variation on the 3 beat weave where you swing the poi in figures of 8, in equal time, and so they cross in the middle... (if that makes any sense - it does to me).
I am 16, and also play djembe / electric guitar, do Kung Fu (used to do Karate - 4 years, and Fencing - 8 years) and am at college, but poi are my current favourite.
I practice about 2 or 3 hours a day, including on my walk too and from college, and in the park in free periods.
My poi are with 2 loops, black kite cord, and black spiral poi ball, quite soft, with a long purple net streamer that goes out behind them... I really like them.
My main poi inspirations are friends, Hannah, Huw and Stefan, because they're all both good and patient.
Next summer I am hoping to try fire poi, so I will buy some this Christmas to get used to the weight, and improve my strength.
Blimey, this turned into an essay...
sorry |

Heya Lewis, thanks for the welcome
It is great when you finally nail something... but how much of an achievement is it really for something that takes most people a day takes me 4 months?
2-3 hours isn't bad, ideally I'd like more, but I don't have the time. Despite doing a lot though, i sincerely doubt I will ever be 'spinning with the best' - I am simply not coordinated enough |

Hey there Miranda!! That's awesome to hear that you nailed the three beat! It's refreshing to see people with this much dedication as well! I remember when i first started poi, ahh such a long time ago! But yeah i never thought i could be as good as them but yeah i practiced long and hard every day!
Oh! and as for you saying...

...It's a bit early in the game for you to be shooting yourself down like that (^_^) You have it in ya!
Take care now! (^_^)

Hi.
Like with any skill if you keep at it you'll be surprised how good you can get.
I've still got miles to go yet myself. |

wow just read both your threads and well hats off to you like seriously for sticking at it and not giving up as i cant imagine how hard it is for you and nice one for looking for support (we are full of that here ).
On a good note you really couldnt have chosen anything better to pick up and poi is proven to help co-ordination and timing as well as spacial awareness and control but even more so its uber fun and looks the shizzle
welcome to poipoi
