Hi all,
I've practicing alot (only got poi's a week ago), have already nailed butterfly, angel wings, and 3 BTW but these reels have got me! Have tried one hand at a time spinning c/wise and can do right no probs but surprise having trouble with left can't seem to get timing right. I know that's only practice, my question is on the video on here for hip reels the woman seems to spin both hands towards her body HOW DOES THAT WORK! I can do right hand reel but my hand rotates away from my body does this matter or am I doing something incredibly wrong? Also how the hell do you get your left hand to do that should I start the left reel on the up or downbeat? Will keep trying though hopefully should find a rythmn to it soon!

..as for hand movements, both hands are parallel during the move i.e. the same position. Best thing to do is imagine that your drawing the figure 8 with both hands at your side, remember they both have to go in the same direction, this gives you the hand/wrist movement required. To break it down more, the hop half of the eight figure happens at the front of your body, the bottom part of the eight happens at the back of your body.

On some clip i watched somewhere i heard the best instructions for reels;
Ok, first things first put your poi down and imagine youve got ski poles in your hand, make the motion like you would if you were skiing, pushinng backwards with the poles.
Now, when your hands get behind your back imagine they are a cape, swish them out and round in a circular motion behind your back.
When it comes to the front just do the same again, but this time the circle is in the oposite direction.
The clip i watched was for reel turns, and it made slightly more sense for them heh, still, give it a go, and rest assured that reels are something a lot of people get stuck on |

i find the piece of advice that helped me most with reel turns was to "scoop your hands towards your armpits"... this is how i learned it...
1.stand feet forward, body turned to right/left,
imagine there are two little piles of sand about 6inches infront of where your elbows are now (when your arms are by your sides),
2.kinda flick the (imaginary) piles of sand behind you like a dog digging a hole (keep your hands in your armpits)
3.turn your body 180 so you face left/right and flick the (imaginary) sand back infront of you
4. turn your body back to its original position and repeat 1-4 till you get bored and stop
try it without the poi first till you get the general idea... then go nuts!!

p.s tell me if it was any help!! |

| splinter, thank you for posting that video. I've had the same problem as bono, and have been practicing for days now with very little improvement. I saw your video, and within minutes I got it! It's just a matter of practice now. |
