Hi
Ok, this may sound a bit trivial to many of the more experienced spinners but I have run into a problem which I cant seem to resolve.
To understand my situation I can give you a small amount of background on me. I learned to spin using escrima sticks and was introduced to poi completely by accident, but once I saw it I was hooked.
I can do the butterfly and angel wings no problem. I can also do 3 beat and 5 beat weaves forward and reverse, I can do turns while doing weaves as well. I am however completely lost on how to get reels, as simple as it looks and seems I just cant get the feel for them. Which reels should I learn first? Can someone help me with techniques on how to master these.

Im sure Psychotic Neutotic will be able to help you with reels. she taught them to me as i was in the same position as you.
I had learnt maany advanced tricks before the reels. I reallystruggled on them. I think theyre just hard work for some people
So dont feel down. You will get them eventually. |

Hey weazel, im not as experienced as some of the spinners on the forums but i can give you what advise i can
I learned how to perform reels from a friend (Daedra), half the key it seems is how you position your body and turning in good timing with the poi.
Try breaking it down into hands, this is ultimately how daedra helped me learn both hip and shoulder reels.
Your posture should be stood still but with your body lent to the side your starting on (Most likely your right)
As if your poi have been spinning strait and your essentially spinning them in the same position but 90 degrees to the right. (Forward spin)
Your right hand will imediatly tuck behind your back as you swivel from right to centre on the spot. Ultimately you'll find you do one beat behind the back naturally because of your positioning
Your left hand will do the same, but it will perform one rotation on the front of your body. Then as the rotation ends, tuck your arm and writst into a position as if holding a sleeping bag under your left arm, with your wrist slightly behind your back.
At this point both poi are spinning in time behind your back, just complete the move by swivling to face left so your essentially in reverse and this completes the hip reel
If your still struggling with it, then i can grab my mobile and video how your hands should move for the trick, if this would help.
Good luck with the trick

Thanks for the replies
Salamander I'm not sure if video can help me at this point. I am a very tactile spinner meaning I feel the mechanics of a move. When spinning sticks they are like an extension of my arms and flow as I desire them. With poi while performing weaves I can get the same feel for the poi. I think this is a matter of unlearning some of the things I have learned spinning stick and learning the feel for the poi. This will most likely come with experience.
I think now I just need to figure out what reels I need to learn first to help me past the barricade of learning I have encountered. |

After 5 minutes of practice today I finally got the reel turn, as if by magic. I can even stitch them together and make a full turn, although my planes look kinda sloppy. |

I am new to poi and am attempting to learn hip reels, it looks so simple on the video, but I jsut can't get it... when I turn my wrist to get the poi behind me I end up with my elbow in the way.... and I can't seem to get the movement of my body in time with the poi. I have read the replies to this thread and still am having problems.....
will I ever get the hang of it?..... |
