I've been pratacing it over and over and im still struggling to get them crossing as they should. My hands go in the correct place but the poi seem to get tangled going from one side to the other. Any advise?

It sounds to me like your timing is a bit off. I learned to do weaves using sticks ( although a 5 beat may be impossible with sticks) , sticks are a lot more forgiving when you make timing mistakes that would cause a tangle using poi. When I started with poi I found myself taking the spinning balls in the non spinning ones, and ended with me curled into a ball on the ground writhing. I found that when I hit my last beat say on the right side my left wrist was crossing the underside of my right wrist in a near 90 degree angle and I kinda tilt myself very slightly to the left. this allows me to stand in a relaxed posture. Once my posture was correct timing was the only ingredient I needed to do this move.
