I have been spinning poi since last summer, when I got some (cobras) for my birthday. For christmas I just got a pair of Poi flags. Wow -they are hard work, I am building up some arm muscles! They go a lot slower than the tennis ball poi, it takes some getting used to. I got orange ones - my husband says I look like I am trying to direct an EasyJet plane in to land . 
I also bought my son a pair of 'mouse' pois (the small ones) - well father xmas put them in his stocking anyway! They really whip round.
I mainly practise in the playground while my kids are in the sandpit. I think the light-up poi look really cool but I don't get out much when its dark these days!
