I would definitely go with socks. I learned with chains and ended up with loads of bruises. The less harm that comes to you the better.
AS for homemade tail poi, just tie ribbons to your socks Or if you have a sewing machine and some time you could adventure to making your own. |

i have never even used sock poi
as far as making tailed poi i made tailed poi by following easily available instructions for piramid shaped juggiling balls and adding a tail. i used 2 fishing swivels and platited the string on each one so it does not untwist the string. for the handels get a strip of fabric and shape into an m shape then sew the bottom of the m togther
hope this is usefull |

the tail should be roughly a thrid to half the length of the circumference of the circle the poi spin in.
To work this out, grab a calculator and grab your poi. Measure the length of the string its attached to, which we will call S cm.
Then simply multiply S by pi. Which is roughly 3.14
So 3.14S should do for the lenth of your tails.
My friend made some poi. He used the kind of weirdp lasticy crepe material kites are made out of. |

First set of poi i ever used - 2 tennis balls with holes drilled through, held on to a piece of string with a plastic bead
Then got a set of glowballs, you learn faster when you know it will hurt if you get it wrong |
