Hello and welcome Kirsty! (^_^)
Good to have you aboard!
Yeah pay those bruises no heed! It's all part of the fun! Your not human until you've injured yourself a few times hehe:P
So you're after some tips to get you on your Poi'ing feet eh? Well I can offer the following advice to help you on your way!!
- Primarily learn some of the Poi terminology!
Here's a link to a WIP guide that a few of us on the site are working on.
Poi Guide
It has a lot of the terminology and the basic knowledge you need to know. Like what "Planes" are and the various "Poi Families".
This will help you understand things better if someone is trying to explain a trick to you!
- Firstly make sure that you check out the video tuition that this site offers. It can be really helpful for learning the basics. Which at the end of the day is important! As most tricks how ever advanced are derived from basic tricks like the weave, buzzsaw or butterfly!
- Secondly, if someone is showing you how to do a trick. Sometimes rather than just showing you with the Poi, which can be confusing, just ask them to show you the movements without the Poi. Yeah it may look a bit silly when you're waving your hands around but for tricks like Isolations and Weaves this can be very helpful!
- Thirdly, try not to stand still and rigid when your playing with your Poi. Chuck some good music on. Something maybe a bit slow like ambiance to start off with so it's nice, slow and steady. Move around and dance with your Poi. Fluidity of movement is a very key part of Poi spinning and making it look nice and effective. If you're standing still you look like a nervous drone which at the end of the day doesn't look to good to watch! (^_^)
- Furthermore, practice loads!! When you learn a new trick it's bound to look a bit sketchy. So when you learn something new, slow it down and keep practicing it over and over. Then as your "Planes" begin to straighten out your trick will look a lot smoother and fluid. Which then means when you come to incorporate it into your Poi spinning. It will fit in nice and clean, rather than, the rest of your performance looking good until you do a sketchy looking trick!
I hope that this helps you get started on your long Poi'ing journey!! If ever you are in need of help. Don't hesitate to ask anyone here on the forum. They are all very skilled Poi spinners and I'm sure that they can help you out in no time at all!
Take care now and happy spinning! (^_^)
