becky, good things come to those who practise. that's the whole thing about poi. there is skill involved yeah, but that skill comes with practise. its all about muscle memory to start off with. get your head round a lot of the basics. learn some transitions from forwards to backwards weaves and basic stuff like this. you don't have to find your own style straight away. find some good poi videos, copy them, learn off of it, and then in time you will develop your own style.
as you said yourself, confidence will come to you with time. and the more confident you are the better you will look. learn a small routine, and work on it, put a bit of footwork in it. as soon as you start turning or moving side to side with poi it is classed as dancing. try make these movements graceful and elegant. once you have done it several times your body will learn the routine and you will be able to do moves smoothly and look good while doing it.
Learn about the different plains you can explore with the poi. such as wall plains and door plains. try mix them up and soon you will get some good personal style.
i am a dancer myself, so i do know what i am talking about by the way  |

Well, cant get better advice than from a dancer himself! I'm the same really, i love to glowstring in a club but when i realise that people are watching me i get all self conscious and mess up, so i only do basic moves. I guess what you could try to do is just concentrate completely on the music and yourself, try to forget that there's anyone there watching you and you're just in your bedroom alone or something. I suppose this is what helps me!
And drugs(but i didnt say that, nor do i condone it ) |

I know exactly what you mean becky! I felt the same for a long time. But!! :D its starting to happen! Im not a patch on some Ive seen poi dancing but It stil feels great when you can just lose your self in the motion... even if im pretty limmited in moves but you DO learn.. even when you think your not getting anywhere! just keep at it! thats my advice! |

Yepp, the "Aha!" moment is great, when you find yourself just doing stuff and not thinking much at all
Yes sure its alot of smacks a bit here and there in the beginning but it loosnes up.
I felt I could do alot more trasitions right after I learned high and low windmills and then connected them, all felt alot easier then |

I feel that once I had got past the 'awkward-transistion' stage, the music took over the mood of my performance.
Since, it's seemed that when I have music on, I don't do poi, the poi do me :P and occasionally you just trance it up, and when you stop you think 'wow- i cant remember any moves i just did!' because you were so lost in it.
its great :D!!! |
