I am having a bit of difficulty learning them.. I followed the tuition videos but I still cant seem to be able to get the Poi to spin properly.. And with the shoulder reels I assume the "how to do" is the same as hip reels just at a higher level.

I've just gone back over the tutorials to try and get this sorted for me. I found going back to reel turns was very useful as you do the action once but have time between them to spin normally and get the planes back if they have gone a bit wobbly.

Once you can do reel turns smoothly hip reels come together a lot easier.

Shoulder reels are almost hip reels but higher, except instead of one going in front and one behind as the poi pass at the bottom of their swing. They are both in front or both behind you.

your hands don't need to go completely behind your back. you just have to move them slightly backwards to pull the poi behind your back.

To make the poi go behind you try turning your hand inwards and lifting it up towards you armpit, this should help direct the poi correctly.

Check the reel turns tutorial for a starting point. If you can do these, then it's a case of only turning halfway andalternating which poi is infront.

Have a look at the hip reels tutorial if you haven't already.

I can do the hip reels and expected them to be really difficult to learn but i kinda worked it out pretty quickly.
(I'm right handed so im going from that)
spin a figure of 8 around you with your left hand (or the hand you don't use), you will find this really easy one way and really difficult the other so just stick with the easy one obv, spin it so that you get one circle in front of you and then one behind you so that your body is in the middle where they cross. practice this a few times with both hands and remember to keep your right hand going the same way as your left would. then just try to do it at the same time. some people even find doing it split time easier if you start hitting poi tails together.

this is pretty simple but you get the hang of it fast.

shoulder reels however i just keep catching my head on the cable and then catch my cartilage ear piercing. OW! Confused

Hi.
So how come I can do the Windmill and the Corkscrew (which a friend taught me to do, my first go of the poi) and I can't do hip or Shoulder Reels? I know the muscles that you use might be different then usual by are your forearms suposed to hurt? Confused Very Angry
