so was at a party this weekend and id taken along a few sock poi as the birthday girl used to spin with me in uni but has kinda fallen out of practicing it. however at the bbq there where a coupple of little kids one 11 (a flippin geniues) and another 12 or 13 i think? iuno i was a little drunk. but they where very enthusiactic about learning, so i talked them through some of the basics (together time split time butterflies what i used to call crosssers but are actually together time weave, weave and then the 3bt weave).
the 11 year old kid picked it up sooooo fast i mean i got compliments on my first time spinning when i managed the normal thing i called crossers, this kid was something else tho he pick it all up through my badly inebriated instructions (at points i just gave up and moved his arms my self to explain what i ment) and he did it all at a speed i generaly show off with. honnestly ammazing and rewarding its been a while since ive talt any one something and it was nice to get to experiance the joy again ^_^
so this thread lil about wonder boy 'ryhan' (sp?) mostly tho about your teaching experiances good and bad what methods helped etc |

I bought some tailed poi for my niece and nephew after they saw me trying to play with mine!! The nephew is 17, niece is 14!
He's picked it up really quickly and has managed a fair 3 beat weave! I can't even do that myself yet!! It's good to watch though and we're now giving each other pointers as we pick things up!!
Oh and we had the poi out at a friends birthday over the weekend too! lol I took my LED glow poi and everyone ooohed and aaahed at my very basic spinning!! hehe
Oh and now I have to get them some glow poi too!! Luckily their dad (my brother) is going to give me the money for them!! lol |

humm i may have gone off on a tangent there? as i was ment to be saying, it must be nice to spin with others but is it just me or every time you teach someone new does it seem they progress quicker and quicker? |

i had one guy i taught be up to my level of spinning in a cpl months (ive been spinnin for years)
he's not quite as 1337 as me no tho =P
but yeah, i taught him some basics 2-3bt weave, butterfly stuff (takeouts, extentions etc) baisic flower stuff.. n he got the hang of it fairly fast.
and then the next time i saw him like a month or so after, he was rather amazin.
he'd gone off on his own and found all his movment space like turning and some long arm stuff on his own
he doesnt have the net either so he musta gone and worked on it totaly solo
i still see him around occasionaly but i've not had a propper spin with him in a while but no doubt he's advanced some more lol
it jus surprised/annoyed me that he picked thins up so fast, stuff i just couldnt figure out on my lonesome. so kudo's to you jimmy, one of my many poi padaewans

lol yeah i kinda get what you mean lil ryan picked up my mates old death trap poi (keyring thingys all bent and string and hook's etc) those things took a few peices of my arms and a leg when i was learning and the kid was going psyco with them, i mean id done my best to make them safe as i used them ages ago but u still had to be careful.
as far as i can tell ryan ignored all advice spun them fast and was unharmed, while thi obviously is a good thing it does make me feel like a bit of a prat.
sounds like you taught a realwonder guy there willow i always enjoy watching self taught nearly every case i see where someones stummbled into something is a lil different to the general examples out there.
personaly i have the odd habit of throwing issolations into weave plain changes things like outside to inside 3beat and 5 beat odd since i still cant get normal issolations |
