Hi guys. I noticed there was nothing much about stalls on this site, so decided to do a little introduction for them. They are such a nice family of moves and when done well look really nice. This is the first time I've written anything like this - teaching over a keyboard as opposed to teaching face to face is much harder than it looks! So any comments on how well you understood it, or how usful the information was would be most greatful. Enjoy!
Crappy video acompanies this text. Will updates with a better quality and better spun video soon!

An introduction to stalls

What is a stall?
A stall is a move in which the poi become static. Coming out of a stall usually ensues the poi spinning in the opposite direction to what it started off.
Stalls are a sneaky way of making your spinning look more fluid. For example if you are having difficulty with the transition between butterfly and opposite directions hipreels, you can stop the poi cleanly and sharply, giving you a second to think about what you’re doing next, and then carry on.

What poi are best for doing stalls with?
Sock poi or Cone poi are best for doing stalls with. Doing stalls with ‘ball on a string’ poi is possible, just a tad harder. Doing stalls with tailed poi is again possible. It can be done, it just looks sloppy and messy, and doesn’t look clean. Socks and cones are the easiest poi to use for learning stalls

How do I do a stall?
Go back to your basics and put one poi down. Spin a circle in front of you in the wall plane spinning clockwise (right handed) or anticlockwise (left handed).
As the poi come to the top of its rotation you are going to adjust the way the poi spins using your hand. As the poi starts to come down, you follow it with your hand. Almost pushing down imagining the poi going down in a straight line.
Now your poi should have stopped firmly downwards, without it swinging about.
Now practice the other way, then with the other hand

Where else can I do a stall?
The places are infinite. Anyplace you spin around your body, you can stall there. Try doing a reverse butterfly and stalling both poi downwards. They can be done behind the back, above the head, through the legs…the list goes on!

Do I always have to do a stall downwards?
Certainly not. The poi can be stalled at any angle.
If we say that the resting position (poi head facing the floor) is 0 degrees, if we spin a single circle with the poi and then stop, we can say that the poi has traveled a full 360 degrees.
Downwards stalls are the easiest, but try doing some at 45, or even 180! It is exactly the same principle as a downwards stall. You just guide where you want the poi to go with your hand, giving it a little push.

Wow nice article Aimée! It might also be worth a note that stalls don't work quite as well with tails as they do with socks and fire poi. You can still do them, but since the poi head stops, the tail just falls and you lose the trail like effect they have.

Really nice of ya to make this text! Smile
Have never really tried doing any stalls although I know I do stall them a bit now and then when I get lost in the flow, only I cant replicate it if trying.

Maybe I can get a bit more understanding of how they works now Smile
