hey all, im new here @ forums, and also new at poi/fire poi/fire twirling, whatever it is called^^
My story :P : Im dutch, and In summer-holidays I went to thailand, and I saw alot of guys doing the "poi" stuff. I thought it was cool, and I bought a set of poi there. they look alot like these: http://www.informatik.uni-frankfurt.de/~morschh/fotos/poi/pois.jpg
Now, few weeks later, I'm at home, and kinda practising..
Im much of a "newb" in doing poi, so I went on the internet, to find out a thing or two about poi, and thats how I got to this site.
I can do a few moves now,
-2 or 3 beat wave (dunno what one it is, im just spinning them, not counting^^ :P)
-The Butterfly , but how I do the butterfly is different than in vids, mine are "split time" if its called like that. cant do the original butterfly i think ( havent tried to learn it )
-I can turn myself 190 degrees when spinning ^^(not the reel turns move)
-I can do some "thingy"move : first both of them horizontally above my head, next turn in front of me, next turn horizontally above head, etc..
soo I need some advice of you guys, about everything:
-have i got the right poi?
-what new moves should i try to learn?/what move of me should be improved
-etc... advices
--Regards, Boaz a.k.a xera |

Hey, sounds like you're really getting into it.
Hopefully you're doing a 3 beat weave (as even numbers don't work heh), however you might just be body crossing, check out the tuition videos and they'll help you out a lot.
Split butterfly already? Most people learn normal first then struggle on to split, try your best to learn it, you should have your hands relaxed and close together and blah blah blah, check out the vids! :P Then learn some takeouts.
Your weird above the head one sound a bit like angel wings? But i have no idea.
Some people like to buy cobra or parrot tail poi first, because fire poi when not on fire look a bit... Flairless? If you have disposable cash, buy some nice cobra poi with the pretty tails and ooooh... so pretty. Your poi aren't wrong, they'll just really hurt if you hit yourself and they're not a much of a showpiece when unlit.
Suggest you just look at the videos in the tuition section for what to learn next, reel turns are good to learn, and try and learn reverse 3 beat weave, then you can 180 into forwards, then backwards, and it looks snazzy.
Advice? Don't set your fire poi alight for a while... :p
Happy Spinning! |

Yay, im getting the hang of it Im able to do a 3bt Fw Weave now :D, and practiced it for ~20 mins long without stopping, so its kinda become a replacement for the 2bt weave, and its an automatism for me now^^ :D
about the head-over-thingy, I looked on an internet site, and its called the Cork Screw. (I'd also like some advice on how to Link from normal spinning to a cork screw, cuz now every time I want to do it, I have to stop spinning for a sec, then get em in right position, and then start doing corkscrew..)
and hehe, thanks, ill try to learn the 3bt bw weave thingy..
yeah and the normal butterfly doesnt work for me, when I try it, the chains / thingy on bottom of chain collapse^^
Thanks ALOT for the advice, I'd like some more please?(A)
Also another question, my poi ~10-20 centimeters longer than I read that it should be (the length of your arm) , does it make any difference to me? (yes I know, its impossible to do the buzzsaw for me now, but I'll just try all the other tricks ) |
