Hi!
I'm fairly new to Poi. Every two years I go to Boomfestival and see all those poi people do their tricks. So this year i decided to start spinning myself. It all started with a sock and a bean bag But now that i've bought the cobra it's more fun!
I've been using the tutorials on this site and now I can do all the basic tricks, a few intermediate and ive started on the 5 beat weave. But now I'm stuck!!
Any tips???
thx!!! |

Ah, the 5 beat weave. It's had me stumped for ages; i can nearly do it properly, my right poi does an extra spin on the right side and my left on the left side, but i still cant get it to work properly! i think the trick is timing, where you have to start moving your left poi towards the left side just as you've taken your right poi under your left instead of over it like in the normal weave, and then untangling your arms on the left side. (lol, i'm not very good at explaining it i know)
I'm not too sure, we need an expert in here! |

I have been able to do the 5 beat forwards and reverse for about 6 months now. But I spent about a week trying to crack it. The trick is kinda to try and add one spin to each side by taking the hand which goes under on each side coming round the outside and on top of the other hand. It does look like your hands almost lock up, you will just tangle and tangle the poi, and eventually u will be able to add one spin and bring it over to the next side with no tangle. It's a fiddly trick to pick up, although the reverse is not as difficult, although you will hit yourself in the face a few times learning it!
Also once u do have it, you will find as you cross over your trailing poi will catch up by half a beat, you have to be quite quick on the first poi crossing over to keep the distances between poi even.
Good luck with it! |

| Yep, it's all about the practice... It took me ages and then one day it just clicked. The trick is to get used to bringing your hand around under the other so far it's a little uncomfortable. You have to bend it around a bit more than seems right. It will feel a tad unnatural at first but you'll soon gain the flexibility to do it comfortably if you just keep at it. |

hey, ive been doin poi for two years now, i learnt the 5 beat weave last summer, the easiest way to learn it is to watch someone do it then copy them and keep on doing it and doing it until you get it, if you keep practising it you will get it. it was easy for me to learn, but reverse took me along time and gave me blisters. learn it forwards first, it is easier
good luk

Hi, first of all, the newer you are to poi the harder the 5 beat weave is going to be. I'm good at stating the obvious. You need to have mastered control over all of your moves before you can really do this. There is one thing to be able to do a trick, and it is another being able to do it with control. I think style is more important than the number of trick you can do. And also the connection between moves.
Extra tips, you need to understand what your hands need to do. Try doing the 5 beat weave with one poi in your hand, and simulating the other poi in your other hand. Hopefully this will give you an understanding of what needs to be done. I think its good practice to just poi with one hand. It can help build up the weaker arm too.
Another thing, when you bring the poi across your body, rotate your upper body to the side the poi's are crossing too. This can stop the poi's from hitting you. When the back of your hand "kiss" this is when you need to rotate your body.
Oh yeah, you will want to keep your upper arm (shoulder to elbow) close in to your body. This will help you keep better control over the poi, when learning. Don’t get me wrong there need to be an element of freedom.
Hey I hope this helps |
