I've never been called a hippy, however most people who say stuff are people who have never seen it before and all ive been asked is where my circus friends are.
I had some guy explain to his mate as they walked past that my glow poi were a modern form of an ancient kung foo and that i must have been some kind of ninja...

had some chavs walk up to me whilst i was doing fire and i just thought 'oooohhh boy'

but it wasn't too bad. Just "Scuse me but, what are they?"
"Fire poi"
"Fire wuh??"
"Erm, they're basically just big wicks on chains and you soak them in fuel and light them"
"Oh, alright then"

I think the most negative reactions are when male's are using practise poi. If they were fire poi, thats nice and macho, but practise poi are a little different. which is a shame cause I don't think you can really get any good without at some point using practise poi to learn new tricks. Confused

In the US, at least in Texas where I live, there is somewhat of an attachment to poi and the "hippy culture"
This is mostly because most of the fire spinning in Austin is either in our co-op "which we already have a reputation of being hippies) or it is in the woods with other "hippies"
another connotation I have heard about spinners is highly associated with the "rave scene" which has mostly died out, but the connection between spinning lights and ravers is still there.
I am neither a hippy, nor a raver, I lie in a happy medium inbetween.

excellent Smile in between is best.
Over in england poi and glowsticking (glowsticking mostly) is ravish, practice poi with tails means you're a hippy (at least thats what everyone seems to think Rolling Eyes ) and anyone does fire.

Tis fun!

hehe, co-op. Is a shop over here.
