FOR THOSE THAT CAN BE BOTHERED!!!

ajclarke and i reckon it would be a good time waster for anyone bored to see how fast they can spin their poi.

The way you'd do it is measure the length of your poi (stretched if they're socks) and that acts as the radius of a circle. To get the circumference of the circle you will be spinning, multiply your radius (m) by 2xpi. (Maths people will know that 2piR is the circumference of a circle, correct me if I'm wrong...)

Physics people will also know that Speed = Distance / Time. So once you figure out your circumference, use one poi in your best hand to spin 20 revolutions (just in a circle by your side, forwards), and get someone to time it! Then you can do the maths and work out your speed in metres per second (m/s) (you'll have to times the circumference by 20 of course)

I bet NO-ONE will do this, but it's a neat (geeky) IDEA :p

Yeah We geeks rock. I will do this tomorrow. Ill get my mate to time me :D

Good luck and may the fastest arm win.

I also think another rule should be added. To make it fair you have to time from stop, i.e not spinning, so that your speed includes the wind up and acceleration because that way we are all comparing from the same point. :D

Ok I did it. 20 spins including clock up. Another rule should be measure the length of your string from clip to clip not including finger loops or your arms. Take it that your arms dont move enough to make a huge difference.

Ok So here is the result and the maths I di to convert it into Mph (this is right i checked it out with my AS level Physics teacher)

Time for 20 =5.94 seconds divide this by 20 to get time for one = 0.297 seconds

Radius of Swing (i.e the length of string) = 51.5

2πr(π=Pi) to find circumference = 2 x π x 51.5 = 323.5cm

Speed = Distance/Time
= 323.5/0.297
=1089.225589 cm/s

Cm/s is not a good measure of speed so convert tp mph:-

Divide by 100 to get m/s 10.89225589 m/s
Divide by 1000 to get km/s 0.01089 km/s
Times by 60 to get km/minutes0.6534 km/m
Times by 60 toget km/hour 39.204 km/h

Ok so to convert kmph to mph divide by 1.6

So final speed for my Poi Spinning is 24.5 miles per hour

We didnt think this was very quick but imagine a car driving past you at this speed and it seems more reasonable. This is the correct value bacuse as i said i got my teacher to look over it Smile

qua?!? that's some mathematics you got going there, if i could be bothered, i bet mine would be 10,000,000 miles per hour...

lost in the k-hole by chemical brothers is such a poi tune!!!

It was indeed.

But i took both maths and Physics at A level and got A*'s in them at GCSE so i find stuff like that quite easy
