ok i bought my first poi bout 2 months ago and im not too bad...i got most of the basic moves down along with direction changes etc.
i keep seeing people when im out raving doing a behind the back weave. I ask them to just try and show me and no one ever can they just say they learnt by accident.
SURELY......one of you lovely folks must have a bit of advice on how the bobbins i can learn this.
i have a deadline.....ive been asked to poi as an entertainer at an event in march so i need to be shit hot by then......
anyone.....please?
im in stoke on trent btw so if theres neone near me as well that fancies a practice....feel free!! |

lol, depends on what your definition of 'shit-hot' is. We've got poiers who've been doing it for 4 years on this site and they're still learnin new things!
To do btb weave you don't necessarily *need* to know any other moves, but having a good all round knowledge of getting into moves is good, cos it means your co-ordination is good.
These a tuition vid on the btb weave, its the forwards one. In my opinion backwards is easier to start with but forwards goes into more stuff eventually...
What can you do so far? |

Doin one move well makes you good, personally i think what sets people apart isn't how many moves you know, or how well you know them, what wins a crowd over is how you interact with them.
You could just stand there and spin some poi - you will get applauded, If you incorparate a dance into it, exaggerate each movement and REALLY throw the poi around they will cheer!!!!!
And most importantly - smile for your audience!!!! If you feel really brave a wrap or two makes them gasp!!!
If you got music, use it to help you with moves, keep it simple, keep it fluent, and don't worry about repeating moves, your audieance will see you wrapped in these circles of fire!!! Use Giant circles, stalls, all the tricks you are comfortable with to add variation.
I wouldn't even try moves that i'm not sure about - especially if i'm playing with fire!!!!
Good Luck - its a buzz beyond buzzes, you will love it!!!! |

Yeah man, a crowd will love you even if you can only do 5 moves or something. Mainly because it's such a bizarre art, and not many people have seen it before! Sometimes fire can look worse to an audience if you're a beginner, because you are extremely limited in the moves you can do compared to non lit poi.
Maybe you should get some LED poi as well? They don't need money spent on fuel, they give an amazing show and they don't make you stink of paraffin :P You'll also be so much more confident with them!
Good luck anyways :D
A wrap is a move where you wrap the poi string around a part of your body, and then get it to unwind smoothly. They can be awesome. Especially with fire.
But don't try that yet :P.

yeah ive got some led poi and sum sock poi.i wowed a few lookers on at the nec on new years eve. i decided i shud show off lots and spent a good cuple hours just playing with em on a podium hehe. i am a bit of an attention junkie hehe.
ive playing with a kinda wrap thing i guess not sure wat its called but say im spinning forwards il raise my elbows so it stops the poi and it spins back in the opposite direction so into spinning backwards so i can change into a different move. thats quite cool. then i do the same the other way back to forward spinning. is that a wrap? |

That is indeed a wrap. They can look really awesome if performed quickly one after another.
Try a forward spin, to an elbow wrap (under your arm), then lift your leg to catch the rebound of your elbow wrap, so that wraps on your thigh, then it will bounce back up to your elbow, bounce off that again and you'll be in a backwards spin. |

if only i was good enuff i would start the international poi school for aspiring circus freaks the world over hehe.
i cant believe something like this doesnt already exist! |

Workshops usually = people of all abilities. So yeah, there'll be probably some awesome poi gods and goddesses, but also beginners. And besides, having poi gods around is GREAT so long as you can swallow your pride for a day.
The people I've watched and been envious of doing poi have never been anything but nice, and always willing to help you out. (There's something satisfying about teaching someone something new).
A couple of people, like some dude at the beach at a winter solstice thing, aren't so cool. Although he was dressed all hardcore (which I have nothing against) - but basically just thought he was Captain God. Which was depressing. Oh well. I OWNNNND him anyways :P.
It's pompous in itself, I know, but I just don't have time for people who think they're better than you who've never met you before. |
